Long term Hemodialysis Catheter
Long-term hemodialysis catheter are indicated for use in attaining long-term vascular access for hemodialysis. It may be inserted percutaneously and is primarily placed in the internal jugular vein of an adult patient. This catheter is indicated for > 30 days (long- term) placement.
FEATURES
- Material:
Medical-Grade Silicone Elastomer with excellent Biocompatibility, Durability, Softness & Flexibility, naturally less thrombogenic. More comfortable for the patient.
Material TPU stiffer with excellent anti-kinking performance, with excellent Biocompatibility, Durability, Softness & Flexibility, naturally less thrombogenic. - Cuffed Design: Subcutaneous Dacron Cuff Located a few centimeters from the skin exit site, embedded in the subcutaneous tunnel.
- Tunneled Placement: Inserted via a surgical tunnel under the skin before entering the vein (usually jugular or femoral). This separates the venous entry site from the skin exit site, further reducing infection risk.
- Tip Configurations (Designed to Reduce Recirculation):
Split Tip: The distal end splits into two separate lumens, allowing the tips to be further apart within the vein (e.g., Vascath Split Cath, Palindrome).
Step Tip: The arterial (withdrawal) lumen tip is significantly shorter (proximal) than the venous (return) lumen tip (e.g., Mahurkar). Some newer designs have symmetrical step tips.
Symmetric Tip: Both lumens end at the same point but have side holes positioned to minimize mixing. - Lumen Design: Large internal diameters to accommodate the high blood flow rates (typically 300-400 mL/min) required for effective hemodialysis.
Silicone oval-shaped to optimize flow dynamics and minimize resistance.

Cuffed Construction
Dacron Cuff: Integrated near the subcutaneous tunnel exit site. Function: Promotes tissue ingrowth, anchoring the catheter securely to prevent accidental dislodgement and creating a barrier against ascending infections from the skin exit site along the catheter tract. This is the primary feature enabling long-term use (months to years).

Material
Medical-Grade Polymers: Typically made from biocompatible materials Polyurethane (TPU) or Silicone. These offer: Flexibility: Reduces vessel trauma and kinking. Biocompatibility: Minimizes thrombogenicity (clot formation) and tissue reaction. Durability: Withstands long-term indwelling and repeated use.

Reduced Recirculation
Step / Symmetric / Split tip designs optimize dialysis efficiency.
